Abingdon Squash & Racketball Club - Matching Existing Honours Boards

Two dark-stained wooden honours boards for Abingdon Squash & Racketball Club, designed to match an existing board.

Wooden

Abingdon Squash & Racketball Club approached us with a request to update their clubhouse displays with new honours boards while keeping the traditional look of their existing board. They brought one of their original honours boards to our workshop, which allowed us to create an exact match in terms of material, colour, and layout. This project demonstrates the importance of matching existing honours boards accurately, a service we regularly provide for schools, clubs, and organisations across the UK.

Board Design & Matching Process

The new boards were manufactured from sapele veneered MDF, finished with a dark stain to replicate the tone of the club’s original board. Each was shaped to match the unique curved profile of the existing design, measuring 1370 × 460mm. Gold gloss vinyl lettering, lines, and logos were applied to the face, creating a seamless match with the original wooden honours board.

Because we had the existing board in our workshop, we were able to test colours, lettering styles, and layouts side by side, ensuring the new boards would sit alongside the old one without any visible differences. This direct comparison is always the most effective way to guarantee a true match.

Why Matching Matters

When adding a new board, a poor match can disrupt the overall appearance and diminish the sense of continuity. By replicating the details of the original board, Abingdon Squash & Racketball Club now has a consistent set of boards that look as though they were all created together.

We do advise that the more complicated the design, the more time and cost is involved in achieving a perfect match. Elements such as unusual stains, custom shapes, intricate framework and embellishments or hand-applied details can require additional craftsmanship. With this project, we delivered boards that preserve tradition, maintain consistency, and allow the club to continue recording achievements well into the future.
