Wood Types & Stains

We work with two premium wood types:

Light Oak.
- Light and clean in appearance. Works well in modern settings. Available with a choice of light / medium / dark stains.
Sapele.
- Richer, darker grain. Traditional in look, often chosen for heritage settings. Can also be stained to adjust tone.
Other Hardwoods.
- We can work with other hardwoods, walnut american, ash, beech, pine etc. Please contact us for details.

Choosing between them comes down to the look you prefer, as the price is exactly the same for either unstained wood type.

Board Sizes and Capacity

How big an honours board do I need?

The size of an honours board depends on three things:

How many competitions / columns do you need?
How many names do you need in each column?
How many years of space you’d like to allow for?

Those three bits of information will enable us to calculate the size of board you need. It's a tricky thing to advise on the website, but if you get in touch we can certainly help.

In addition, we recommend allowing space for another 10–20 years of names going forwards which gives your board longevity.

Guidelines (size of board and how many entries in a column)

Compact Board (20 entries): 600 mm tall board
Standard (49 entries): 1200 mm tall board
Large (61 entries): 1500 mm tall board.

Lettering, Fonts & Logo's

With over 40,000 fonts in our library, 300+ text & background colour options, and high resolution print capabilities we're able to offer a huge range of custom design options.

WHat font will look best?

We've over 44,000 fonts in our ever growing library to enable us to give you the perfect font for your board. Popular font options are Helvetica, OpenSans and Times New Roman. Sans serif fonts (fonts without the little 'tails' on the letters) give a cleaner look and make the board easier to read. Serif fonts (like Times New Roman) give a more traditional look.

If it seems a little overwhelming, be assured our graphic designers expertise is free of charge and we'll always help and advise as much / little as needed.

What colour text should i have?

To ensure maximum legibility you need a contrast between background and text. Darker woods often pair well with gold, white, or cream lettering, while lighter woods benefit from black or darker text. We offer one of the largest ranges of colours with over 300 choices. Please check our honours board gallery to see various examples.

What size lettering is best?

Typically the lettering on our honours boards are around 12 - 15mm in height. This gives a nice lettering height which is readable in most situations. If your board is mounted high up or in a large hall, a larger font size and high-contrast lettering will boost readability. Our graphic designers can take this into account when working with you.

Can you put my club crest or logo on the board?

Absolutely! One of the benefits of choosing us to manufacture your boards is that we've a huge amount of manufacturing equipment in our premises. Printing your logo and integrating it onto your board is very simple.

Club & School Crests / Logos: We can produce your club emblem, school badge, or business logo using digitally printed decals or vector-cut vinyl for a truly unique touch.
Placement & Sizing: Typically these are placed towards the top of the board, either in a central position or in the top corners. Gable and Hill Top honours boards are perfect for positioning a logo at the top of the board as a stand-out feature.
Graphic Designers: We have an in-house art dept who will create a design proof for you. We just need an idea of what you're looking to display on your board.
Tip: Send us your club logo and we'll incorporate it into the design. The higher resolution image the better, but we're good at working with a variety of different file formats.

What shapes do you offer for honours boards?

Our workshop is equipped with the latest honours board making tools & machines. With that in mind, we're able to make boards to very specific designs and accommodate bespoke design requests.

Shapes: Our Standard Boards include flat top, gable top, and curved top designs, each available in popular sizes from 600 × 600mm upwards. Bespoke shaped boards are also available.
Custom Sizes: Have an unusual wall space or need to match existing honours boards? We can manufacture honours boards to any height or width.
Multi-Panel Layouts: For clubs or schools needing multiple categories (e.g., different sports teams, departments, or donor lists), we can create a series of coordinated panels or a stylish triptych display.

FAQ: Cost & Budget

How much does a wooden honours board cost?

Prices depend on the size of the board, staining and whether any crests are being applied to the board. Smaller boards start from a few hundred pounds, while larger, more detailed boards cost more. We’ll always provide a clear, no-obligation quote once we know your requirements.

Is there a difference in price between oak and sapele?

No, both cost the same. Both are premium timbers. The light oak is lighter in colour and more widely requested by schools. Sapele, with its darker, richer tone tends to be requested by clubs / organisations looking for a deep rich colour.

Do you provide “from” prices or bespoke quotes?

We can provide guide “from” prices, but because every board is made to order it’s best to have a quick chat with us. We’ll confirm an exact quote once we've worked out the design for your board.

Are there cheaper alternatives to wooden honours boards?

Yes. Acrylic honours boards are a budget-friendly alternative. They can be made with coloured backgrounds to match your school branding, but if you want a traditional look wooden look, these boards (wooden) remain the best choice.

Can we include our school crest or club logo?

Absolutely. We can add crests, logos, or mottos to your board, either in full colour (vinyl) or as a simplified design to suit the layout.

What size honours boards are available?

Boards are made to order, so we’ll size the board to suit the content which needs to be displayed. So in summary, we can make any size honours board you require.

Can we customise the layout (columns, sections, titles)?

Yes. We can set the board out in single or multiple columns, add separate sections for different awards, or create decorative headers for titles. As we make all of the honours board and graphics in house, we have total control over the finished item.

What finishes are available?

Oak has a light, clean look, while sapele is darker and richer. Both can be supplied with a matt or satin lacquer. A wide range of stains are able to be applied to the wood giving a larger range of finishes than most.

FAQ: Updates & Care

How do we add new names each year?

We supply pre-cut vinyl lettering, all set out and spaced, ready to apply. There is a short 'How to Apply Honours Board Lettering' on our site which talks you through how easy it is. If you'd prefer, we can fit for you too. For boards that use laser-engraved plaques, we produce new plaques as required along with a spacer template, ensuring they're placed exactly in the right spot.

Can we update the board ourselves?

Yes. If you prefer, we’ll supply the vinyl lettering with application instructions. Many organisations find this easy to do themselves, as well as saving the cost of employing a specialised sign writer.

What happens if we run out of space?

We can somtimes create an extension panel to extend your existing board or, the better option, is to create a second board in the same style so it looks consistent.

How should the board be cleaned?

A light dusting and the occasional wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth is all that’s needed. Avoid abrasive cleaners. Full details can be found in our Care & Maintenance guide.

How long will a wooden honours board last?

With proper care, a wooden honours board will last decades. Many of the boards we’ve produced are still proudly displayed 20+ years later.

FAQ: Installation

Can you install the honours boards for us?

Yes, we offer UK-wide installation. Our installers are experienced, DBS-checked, and trained to work safely in schools and clubs with many holding CSCS, IPAF, PASMA, IoSH qualifcations as needed.

What fixing methods are used?

Wooden honours boards are usually installed with mirror plates. We can supply split batons too, but both of them securely mount the board to the wall. The mirror brackets just give that little bit extra security as they're typically screw fixed.

Can the board be moved later?

Yes. Boards can be removed and refitted if you redecorate or move to a different location.

How heavy is a wooden honours board?

Weight depends on size, but an average board (1.2 x 1.2m) is easily managed by two people.

Do you offer 'supply only' if we want to fit it ourselves?

Yes. We’ll deliver the board with the fixings included. We use either a nationally recognised courier, or we deliver ourselves depending on the distance.
