Greatfields School – Wooden Honours Board

Greatfields School oak honours board showing student achievements with grades, subjects, and universities listed.

Wooden

Greatfields School in Barking wanted a single, well-proportioned honours board to record pupil achievement in a way that felt permanent and properly part of the building. The school is relatively young, and the board needed to do two jobs at once: look established from the day it went up, and leave clear capacity for new names year after year.

We worked with Amir Darr at the school to settle the layout, the crest treatment and the lettering style before anything went into production. A flat-top wooden board in light oak was chosen over a gable-topped design, giving a cleaner, more contemporary line that suits a modern school building while keeping the traditional feel that honours boards are known for. The result is a board that pupils, staff and visitors will read and re-read for years.

Design Highlights

The board was produced from light oak faced MDF with a solid 44mm oak frame, finished in our standard stain 1 to keep the grain visible and the tone warm rather than orange. Overall size was 1200 × 1200mm, a square format that sits comfortably on a single wall section without crowding it.

The Greatfields School crest was digitally printed on white vinyl, precision cut, and applied to the head of the board. Printing the crest, rather than trying to reproduce it in cut vinyl alone, keeps every colour and fine detail of the school's identity intact. The body of the board uses matt cut vinyl graphics in black, with column headings, dividing lines and name entries all laid out for easy reading across the room.

Capacity was the other quiet priority. The layout reserves enough rows that the school can add names for many years before the board fills, and we hold the artwork on file so future updates match the original exactly. Fixing is handled by brass mirror screws, which give a neat finished look on the face of the frame and let the school's maintenance team mount the board securely without specialist tools. For background on the timber choice, our notes on wood types cover why light oak tends to work well in school settings.

Summary

Schools tend to ask similar questions when commissioning a first board. How do we keep it looking consistent as names are added? Who handles the lettering? What happens in five years when the person who ordered it has moved on? In practice, these are the things that decide whether a board still looks right a decade later.

We keep the design files for every school honours board we produce, so when Greatfields send through next year's names, the new vinyl is cut in the same font, size and spacing as the original entries. Updates can be posted out for the school to apply, or we can come and fit them ourselves. Either way the look stays consistent.

A flat-top board in light oak. One crest, clean columns, room to grow. It's a quiet brief, but for a school building a sense of tradition from a relatively recent start, the small decisions matter. Greatfields now has a piece of joinery that records achievement properly and gives pupils something tangible to aim at.
